You Can Help Save the Music in PA!

2

I just recently came across this advocacy initiative that is sweeping musicians all across Facebook. This is a project that is being coordinated by the Seton Hill Chapter of MENC. Presented as an Event, Facebook users are encouraged to “Attend” the event, and then post a few statements about why music is so important to them. All of these testimonies will be compiled into a booklet and circulated to advocate for Music Education in our schools. In just a few days, the event has close to 2,000 attendees, and over 8,000 awaiting reply. This is a truly epic project being done by the people at Seton Hill University that will hopefully put a huge amount of information into the hands of people who need to read it. Below are some of the opening statements on the event page by creator Mandy Eckenrode: (more…)

LeadingNotes.Org

3

On Tuesday February 15th 2011, LeadingNotes.Org,  an online magazine dedicated to bridging the philosophy and practice of music education was launched. Launched by Justine Dolorfino and Nick Jaworski, LeadingNotes.Org attempts to offer a variety of viewpoints to give a broad perspective of the beliefs on philosophy and practice in music education. As stated in the site’s Mission Statement, “It attempts to supplement the already well-established music education online community by providing a platform for persons associated with the field to share their thoughts about teaching music in the 21st century. Our hope is that through making this content available, discussions about important topics in music education can be better facilitated.”

The State of Music Education

The inaugural issue of LeadingNotes.Org was given the theme “The State of Music Education”. Many articles are available on the site that address this issue. They range in variety from the need for the use of Music Technology and performance practice to Advocacy. I am honored to have been asked to write an article for this first issue of LeadingNotes.Org. You can find my article, entitled The Music Education Paradox, and many other great reads right on the homepage. LeadingNotes.Org is very established in social media networks, so check them out on Twitter (@Leading_Notes), like their Facebook group, and join their group at the MusicPLN!

iSchoolBand Review

2

iSchoolBand is an amazing online tool geared towards music teachers. Offering a format similar to Facebook, this program allows teachers to keep track of much of the administrative aspects of teaching all in one program. I briefly mentioned this software in a previous article I wrote for MusicEdMajor.Net entitled ,” Join the Web 2.0 Music Classroom” This was an appropriate place for iSchoolBand because it makes many of the administrative tasks completed by music teachers on a daily basis easier, and adds the collaborative nature found in social media. But because of everything involved in iSchoolBand, I thought that a more in-depth article might be appropriate. Below are just some of the many features offered by iSchoolBand. For additional information and to sign up for iSchoolBand, head over to the iSchoolBand website! (more…)
